WES SUMRAL

"My works instill a paradox. A paradox illuminating adversity and isolation between faith, religion, and beauty.” | Wes Sumrall

Wes Sumrall was born in Houston, Texas, and raised in Memphis, Tennessee.  He became fascinated with painting at an early age, and attended Belhaven University to pursue a stronger painting vocabulary. His process has been informed by impressionism and abstract expressionism. Wes currently lives in Richmond, Virginia,  continuing to wrestle deeply with his process concerning beauty, faith, reason, and culture.

Artist Statement

Painting is always involved with the nature of light. As such, I have sought to use polarized applications of light; rising and sinking subtle variations with harsh instances of movement to instigate a contemplative narrative. Raised in a christian conservative background, the pressures of faith deeply mold my paradigm. Yet, there is relation towards the insufferably fragmented and poignant temporality of the material. Embracing the nuances of both realities, I find myself exiled from religion and reason, and enclosed deep within the fissures of the present cultural chasm. My works instill a paradox. A paradox illuminating adversity and isolation between faith, religion, and beauty.
